The Graduate Program in Health Administration and Policy (GPHAP) is unique among health administration programs in the United States. GPHAP allows students to earn a Certificate in Health Administration and Policy while earning a master's degree in one of the participating graduate schools on campus: The Graduate School of Business, The Harris Graduate School of Public Policy Studies, and the School of Social Service Administration. What makes the program so valuable is its interdisciplinary focus... (read more)

GPHAP Alumna Profile

Catherine Hermann

Catherine Hermann knows that finding a living solution for older adults who can no longer care for themselves is no simple matter. As Catherine experienced before coming to the Graduate School Business (GSB), many families caring for an older loved one find themselves unprepared to navigate the complex and often confusing landscape of long-term care.

Recognizing an opportunity to provide a critical service to underserved market, Catherine, a 2008 graduate of the GSB and the Graduate Program in Health Administration and Policy, developed and launched The Care Concierge, LLC, a senior care consulting company in the Chicagoland area.

The Care Concierge helps families through the long-term care planning process with seniors and their families to ensure optimal outcomes for families, in terms of lifestyle, health and finance.  The Care Concierge assists families in understanding care options for facilities and home-based care, provides recommendations to secure services and helps families in the critical period of transitioning into long-term care.  It also advises families in other important long-term care issues such as advanced directives, financial planning, wills and trusts, and long-term care insurance.

In addition to building a successful business, Catherine has also been working to develop affordable service options to income-restricted families.  To start, Catherine will be delivering free monthly community seminars across the Chicago area.  Also, an online web portal is being developed which you can visit at http://www.thecareconcierge.com for more details.

A project of this scope requires passion, patience, drive and commitment, and the GPHAP program has played a large role in preparing Catherine for the complexities of the industry and intricacies of the aging demographic, as well as providing important network connections and industry introductions.

“Joining the GPHAP program has been one of my better decisions.  While my education at the GSB was truly amazing, GPHAP was able to broaden my scope and introduce me to healthcare topics that I really needed.  The professors and support staff have provided much needed support and guidance, and they clearly enjoy helping me (us) succeed!  It has also been a wonderful opportunity getting to meet and work with students from all of the other schools – when you find others who share your passion, it just makes the entire experience that much better.  I highly recommend the GPHAP program!” ~ Catherine
