The Ray E. Brown Recruitment Fellowship
The Ray E. Brown Recruitment Fellowship
The Ray E. Brown Fellowships are awarded over the summer to an incoming student from each of the participating GPHAP schools who are also seeking admission to GPHAP, while at the University of Chicago. All applications are reviewed by the GPHAP Director and GPHAP Faculty Committee. The applicants are considered based on their commitment and passion to the health care field, their demonstrated understanding of the value of interdisciplinary, collaborative approaches, and the student's ability and willingness to take a leadership role in the program.
Students must apply for the Ray E. Brown Recruitment Fellowship by July 15th of the summer before entering their first year.
The Ray E. Brown Recruitment Fellowship application is now integrated with the GPHAP application, which may be downloaded HERE. Click HERE for the most recent Brown Fellowship description.

The Arthur Quern Fellowship
Through his many professional affiliations, including leadership roles with the University of Chicago Hospitals (as Trustee and later as Chairman of the Board) and the Illinois Board of Higher Education, Arthur Quern demonstrated his devotion to health and education. His many contributions to public service were characterized by humanity, wisdom, generosity, intellect, and integrity. Through an endowment funded by the Field Foundation of Illinois, the Graduate Program in Health Administration and Policy and the University of Chicago Hospitals, the annual Arthur Quern Summer Fellowships has been providing unique opportunities to students since 2000.
The Quern Endowment awards fellowships to first-year GPHAP students to support summer field work, internships, or independent projects aimed at developing students’ leadership skills in the field of health policy and management. Such projects or internships are designed and initiated by individual students and must be independent of any formal field work assignment, internship, or summer job arranged by one of the professional schools. Innovative projects or new initiatives based in the Chicago area, or those involving some collaboration of the public and private sectors, are especially encouraged, though projects can be conducted outside the Chicago area as well.The objective of the Quern Fellowship is to foster innovative thinking and leadership in GPHAP students who wish to pursue creative and self-initiated health related projects over the summer between their first and second years. All first year, full-time GPHAP students who are in good academic standing and up to date on their GPHAP requirements are eligible to apply. Proposed projects must be student-initiated and not part of a pre-established or existing internship. Click HERE to view the most recent "Call for Proposals".
Quern awardees are expected to carry out the project as described in the proposal, continue in the second year of the GPHAP program and provide a brief report (5-10 pages) to the GPHAP director highlighting the project activities, observations and conclusions. Awardees will also present their findings at a luncheon seminar held during the winter quarter of their second year. Quern awardees are also expected to be available to other incoming GPHAP students to answer questions about their project and experiences.
Interested students must submit a complete application to the GPHAP director by the first Monday after the spring quarter break. Fellowships are typically $5,000. The application form may be downloaded HERE.

Erikson Hospital Fellowships at the University of Chicago Medical Center
The Graduate Program in Health Administration and Policy partners with UCMC to offer GPHAP students a range of summer internships in hospital administration. Projects change from year to year, but are intended to provide students with a specific experience in hospital management while exposing them to the broader and complex aspects of hospital administration. Depending upon how many students participate, UCMC may provide a weekly management seminar for the participating GPHAP interns.
All full-time GPHAP students are eligible to apply contingent upon both: a) taking the first required GPHAP course, SSA 475, Introduction to Health Systems, during the spring quarter of their first year and b) being current with all GPHAP requirements such as co-curricular summaries. Interested students must complete an Internship Interest Form, available HERE, typically towards the end of the winter quarter.
A summary of the Erickson UCMC Internship is available HERE.
A list of 2007 and 2006 Erickson Hospital Fellowships is available HERE.

Research Assistantship Opportunities
The University of Chicago
Graduate Program in Health Administration and PolicyResearch Assistantship Program
The Graduate Program in Health Administration and Policy (GPHAP) would like to encourage collaboration between students and faculty interested in health policy. To this end, GPHAP sponsors research assistant positions for health-related research.
GPHAP provides funding for up to 100 hours per student per academic year at $12 an hour. By providing funding for the initial work, it is hoped that GPHAP’s RA program will connect students to faculty involved with health related research and facilitate longer termed projects. This is a great opportunity to not only earn some extra money, but to
- deepen student's health care knowledge and skills;
- develop student's understanding and skills in research methodology;
- establish relationships with faculty who may be outside student's own program;
- fulfill the GPHAP practicum requirement; and
- strengthen student's resume.If you are interested in working as a research assistant in health related project, or would like to sponsor a project, please see the links below and review the available project forms. Once you find a project that you think is a good match, contact the faculty member directly to find out more information and arrange an interview. Please CAREFULLY read the Q & A section below if you wish to pursue this opportunity.
Each quarter new projects are identified, and GPHAP students are eligible to apply for positions throughout the academic year, depending on enrollment levels.
